How To Clean Fryer Oil
Many electric deep fryers now come with a filtration system that will filter out small bits of leftover batter and food floating in your frying oil. However, if you have a more spartan or older model, you’ll have to filter your oil manually. Filtering oil is a messy job, but it is necessary to keep your oil fresh and to prevent leftover foods from leaving a bad taste on foods you fry in dirty oil.
First, find a large deep container to store your oil in. Then get a mesh strainer and place it over the container. Pour out your dirty oil into the strainer slowly and wait until all the solid particles have filtered out of the oil. You can then transfer the frying oil back into your Electric Deep Fryer.
This should be done periodically to keep your oil fresh as long as possible. As long as you filter your oil, avoid excessively high temperatures, and keep your oil covered in the dark, it should last for several months. You should dispose of frying oil when the oil darkens in color, starts to smell rancid, and becomes thick and viscous. Stay tuned for our next article on how to properly dispose of frying oil from your Electric Deep Fryer.
Factors To Consider When Choosing An Electric Deep Fryer
There are several factors to consider when choosing which Electric Deep Fryer to purchase. What types of food are you looking to cook in your fryer? Do you need a large fryer or a compact unit that will fit on your counter? How important is speed and cooking temperature? Is easy cleanup important?
Small compact Electric Deep Fryer units are useful for frying smaller foods such as vegetables, chicken wings, and French fries. A fryer with a fast recovery temperature time will provide a more even cooking temperature and result in more evenly cooked food as well as shorter cooking times. You’ll also want to look for a unit with a filtration system and a cover or deep well so oil doesn’t splatter everywhere each time you use your Electric Deep Fryer.
If you are not used to frying food, you will also want to get a fryer with a timer and adjustable thermostat. This will easily keep your food and oil from burning and possibly causing a kitchen fire. If you want to be able to cook two different foods with different cook times simultaneously, get an Electric Deep Fryer with two baskets.
You’ll also want to look for an Electric Deep Fryer that claims they have a “safe to touch exterior”. This means that the surface of the unit won’t get burning hot when it is used. This is an extremely important feature if you have counter tops that could melt, limited counter/kitchen space, or have children in the house.
I think that for the right balance of safety, price, and features, these electric deep fryers are the best overall performers.
